Napa is strict, Sonoma is relaxed
Napa County's winery permits limit picnicking, so true picnic wineries there are rare. Sonoma has far more lawns that welcome a basket.

Buy the wine where you picnic
Outside wine is almost never allowed at wineries. Expect to buy a bottle or glass to use their tables — the fair trade for the view.

Groups change everything
Parties of 6–8+ often need a reservation, and many wineries won't take limos or buses without one. Call ahead.

Dry Creek Valley
A small organic estate on Dry Creek Road known for sparkling wines and Rhône varieties. It openly invites guests to bring a picnic to their tasting and is friendly to kids and dogs.

Healdsburg
A wine-country hub two minutes from downtown Healdsburg where several small family wineries share one property. Its piazza, shaded tables and bocce courts make it an easy place to picnic between tastings, and weekend wood-fired pizza fills in if you forget lunch.

Russian River Valley
A big, friendly family estate on Occidental Road west of Santa Rosa with inexpensive flights, walk-ins welcome and cheese and cured meats for sale. The winery's own 2026 picnic itinerary suggests building a basket at a Sebastopol market and spreading a blanket on its Olive Terrace or vineyard meadow.

St. Helena
Napa's historic big-name estate (founded 1876 and celebrating 150 years in 2026), with hand-dug caves and the ornate Rhine House. It isn't a picnic destination, but its visitor FAQ does allow outside food at picnic benches on the edge of the property, which is handy if you're touring St. Helena with a packed lunch.

Napa Mountains
A family-owned Howell Mountain estate (founded 1996) offering a private 90-minute vineyard, winery and cave tour with tasting. Guests are welcome to stay for a picnic on the private patio afterward. It's a peaceful, crowd-free mountain alternative to the valley floor.

Calistoga
A small Calistoga estate founded in 2006 by veteran winemaker Nils Venge and Mark Carter, with a relaxed patio looking toward Old Faithful Geyser. Walk-ins can buy a bottle to enjoy on the estate, and 2024–2026 picnic guides say you can bring your own food to the patio.
